Because of the weather, the race was delayed one week to December 21. This significantly reduced the number of runners who would normally run the race. However, this did not deter the Striders, who made up nearly 25% of the runners. Thanks to the high turn-out, the Striders’ teams did exceptionally well.

Comments from Bruce: I got 500 points for the Mauler race. Here is how I figure it:
Prior to the race, there was a course map. I must have gone back to study it at least 5 times over at least 25 minutes. The course was also marked very well, with orange flags, orange tape, cones, and orange, green, and pink paint in the snow. When the race started, there were so many runners in front of me, I didn't bother to count. We went through turn after turn; up hills and down. But, my studying paid off as I knew exactly where I was on the course. As we came screaming down a steep snow-covered hill, I knew that the next turn was to the right. Joy Jawarsky was directly in front of me. She went straight instead of turning to the right. I saw the painted arrows and the orange flags - directing me to turn. So, I turned, yelling that I was turning. A spectator yelled back, "No, go this way!" I hesitated, but I knew where I was and went where I knew I had to go. I kept running and when I finally saw the finish line, NO ONE WAS AROUND IT. I had come in first. Later, I found out that Joy and everyone in front of her had gone straight to the finish line. The finish line people were not ready for the runners yet, so they sent them on up a hill. The runners didn't go far, but turned around and decided to just finish. That left a gap of almost 3 minutes before I came in, leaving the finish line vacant and, as I approached, I figured that I had WON. On top of that, there were a number of mix-ups: spindles out of order, runners being sent back out along the course and going backward to the correct direction.
I have been in other races where runners went off course. They were given a choice of going back to do it right or being DQ'd. Not so here. The Compuscore guy added 3 minutes to everyone's time. I was scored as coming in 21st place while Joy came in 13th. My time was scored as 28:50 (9:15 per mile).
Of course, I let Dave Hoch know. And at the awards ceremony, I was given the 2nd place in age - which I had to give back because the honest guy who was given 1st knew that he wasn't really first. Then I got first-in-age and first Age-graded. Later, at the bar, Dave bought me a beer. He knew it was a disastrous finish.
