Comments from Eva: We did it! Our team effort paid off and we were the proud recipients of the George Whittmann Participation Award at last Thursday's Pfizer race. The trophy is beautiful and is presently residing on my mantle. I will bring it out for all to see and admire on October 25 (marathon party). [Ignore Date - Webby]

Thanks to all participants and special congratulations are in order to Karyn Layton who ran a 20:02 (a new PR for her by appox. 40 secs). There were some members who had entered the race but were not able to run, I hope you're all feeling better and note that your entry helped the Striders attain the award.

So thanks to all and see you at the races. Eva

Comments from Bill Shuler on setting 2 PRs: At this rate I'm either dropping :10 per month or :30 sec's per race... (hey, I'm being positive here). This could mean that by the Dover 5K I'll be down to 20:20 (or 21:11...). Regardless, by next spring I'll be knocking up sub 19's...

Race Director/Strider, Steve Austin,  did a great job again with the annual Run For Life, which was shortened to 4 miles this year.  With plenty of Striders volunteering, and Boonton Police enthusiastically supporting the new-to-Boonton race, all went smoothly. The race is held on behalf of Saint Clare's' Community Health Trust and Safety Town.

Bruce was the top male Strider finisher (2nd OA) and Karyn Layton was the first female Strider finisher (3rd OA). Congrats!

Notes from Joel Ange:  Lessons on how not to be a course marshal. I was first assigned to a position on Powerville Road to direct the runners to turn back into the parking lot. That would have been pretty easy. However, just before the start of the race I was redirected to the corner of Valley and Powerville. The intersection already had a police stationed there who was ready to lecture me about driving down the side of the road that was closed when I told him I was there to help him. A few minutes later another police officer showed up and said that someone was needed on the corner of Rockaway Valley Road and Snake Hill. I said that I knew where that was and started down the wrong side of the road again. When I got to Snake Hill Tom Bobsein greeted me (I guess they figured he did not count as a course marshal). Anyway, since the road is pretty narrow, I decided to pull as far off the road as possible. Unfortunately I did not see the ditch on the side of the road and the next thing I knew, the right front tire was in the ditch not quite touching the ground and the rear back tire was about a foot above the ground. Needless to say, front wheel drive was not quite good enough to get out of the ditch. However, I figured everything would be OK since I am a member of AAA automobile club and I had a cell phone in my car. However, little did I know that Boonton is still an alien town that has not ventured into the 21st century where cell phones can actually be used. I then went knocking on some doors looking for someone who would let me use their phone. I did find one very friendly individual who let me use his phone. He confirmed that cell phones do not work in the area. Anyway a tow truck eventually showed up and pulled by car out without any apparent damage. In the mean time a police officer showed up and had a good laugh about how I managed to end up in the ditch. He couldn’t quite believe that I had backed into that position.

Thanks to Ron Gatske and Tom Bobsein for helping me out; and special thanks to Gary and Steve for delivering the pizza.

Total Team Time - 1:31:29

Comments from Lori: We got awards for 2nd place coed 4-person teams (out of 18 teams)! We finished 10th of 39 4-person teams, 2nd of 18 coed 4-person teams, and first of 6 coed 4-person teams age 30-39! We were about 9 ½ minutes behind the first coed 4-person team (average age 16 vs. our 37), not even close. Also, the first biker from a 4-person team to hit the bike-to-canoe transition area was from that same team, so I don't mind losing to them. I'm guessing he came in 5-10 minutes before Mike did (she really knows how to rub it in, don't she? - Mike Los). And by the way, we beat the 3rd place coed team by 43 seconds!!! That makes me feel good – I was really cranking in the canoe and that makes it seem worthwhile. Jean didn't think I could keep up that pace, but I was able to maintain it. Not bad for my 2nd time in a canoe!

The day was picture perfect for a race. The views of the Stature of Liberty, Ellis Island and lower Manhattan while running along the waterfront were spectacular. The pancake flat course with not much wind this year resulted in fast times. The only problem occurred at about the three-mile mark when two trains pulled in front of the runners and momentarily stopped the runners resulting in about a 30-second delay. Other than that, the race was well run with no other traffic problems; in fact most of the race is run in Liberty State Park where there is no traffic at all.
