Thanks to Madeline’s help we were able to enter 6 women’s teams with each one scoring points for the Striders. As this race shows, it is more important to participate on the team than how fast you may run. Now all we have to do is figure out what happened to our 60-year old men’s team, lest the women continue to put the men to shame.
Following are the team results. With our men’s open team captain Mike Los not running, the men’s open team only managed an 8th place finish. However, the other teams all did extremely well.
Men’s open team: 8; Men’s 40 team 3; Men’s 50 team 2
Women’s open team 7; Women’s 40 team 2 & 5; Women’s 50 team 1 & 2; Women’s 60 team 1

It was a nice cool day for a race, although it could have been warmer for the picnic afterwards. The race starts out on a very wide field that quickly narrows to a dirt path. Unless you a lucky enough to be at the very front of the pack, the first mile is extremely slow; and who put those trucks in the middle of the path, making it even more difficult for the runners. The wet grounds and puddles did not help either. Like most runners my first mile was the slowest. The rest of the race contains the usual challenging hills and beautiful scenery. The last mile is mostly downhill, and was my fastest mile of the race.
The Striders entered teams in most of the age group; we did not enter a men’s 60 team where we only had two runners. In spite of injuries, which slowed and even prevented some of our teammates from finishing, the older teams did very well, although there were no first place finishes.

Chris ran her first race in one and a half years and did great finishing fourth in her age group. Even though her leg injury continues to bother her and prevents her from pushing off, she ran at a steady pace and finished as strong as she started. Betty Langenkamp ran her first 10K, this being her longest race ever. Even though Sherry Sikora is recovering from a foot injury she suffered during indoor track season, she is obviously getting back into shape, breaking 40 minutes. So much for saying that she planned on taking it easy and run 7 minute miles.
This was the third USATF masters team championship of the month. Talk about lumping all the races together. We now get to rest until the next championship race, which will be the Teterboro 5K in July. The women continue to excel with four teams scoring performing well.
