Comments from Bruce. The Mt. Tabor, Howard Bell Memorial 5K was held Monday, 5 Aug 02

Hot humid evening. Small race. Tough course. I will mention more than just the Striders because many of the Striders will recognize the names:

Wharton 5 K Mini-marathon: 6 August 2002
Bruce Langenkamp 17:49 4 OA
Wayne Bell 19:55 12 OA
Betty Langenkamp 27:10 1 OA

Comments from Bruce. Last night, the Wharton 5 K Mini-marathon was held. This run was free to the residents of Wharton. And non-residents were allowed to run, but were not eligible for prizes. Since the race was held at the location of the Wednesday night Striders’ Runs, Bruce, Betty and Wayne entered and ran as outsiders.
Since there were not enough women to collect all of the trophies, Betty was awarded the first place trophy even though she was a Roxbury resident and not a Wharton resident (Wharton is the mailing address but not where taxes go).

Thanks also go to Wharton resident Bill Trengove who, although he was too injured to run, cruised the course on his bicycle and called out times and encouragement during the race.

Elvis Presley International 5K (Memphis, Tenn.)  17 August 2002
Alice Guerrieri   44:52

Christmas in August 5K: 22 August 2002
Willy DeRoberts 18:12 4 OA, 1 AG

Willy ran his second fastest 5K ever and was the first place master finisher.

12th Annual Picatinny Cannoball Triathlon, 250M Swim/10K Bike/5K Run 24 Aug 2002

Michael Los 48:07 1 OA
James Murnane 51:49
COL (P) Steve Yaros
April Perciballi 1:14:14, 2nd Female
Jessica Thalman 1:19:05 3rd Female
Marlene Thalman
Cassandra Thalman
Bill Thalman Sr.
Billy Thalman Jr.

The day was cool and there were heavy rains. ‘Col’ Steve Yaros was welcomed by the lower ranking military soldiers prior to the race. On the bike course there was one major uphill, it has been unofficially reported that only two competitors actually pedaled to the top without having to push the bike. The bike course had two major downhills, despite the fact that Jim Murnane had no brakes (wet), he escaped injury as did the rest of the competitors. A MCS has finished first in 8 of the 12 annual races to date. Everyone had a great time and the only people who were disappointed that day were the Medics and the helicopter pilots - Rob had other commitments that day!

Note: At the time of publication Official Finish times were not available for all of the participants.

IS THIS A HOT SUMMER OR... ????
