Run For Awareness 5K: 7 April 2002
Mike Los 17:13
Will DeRoberts 18:17
Charles Castiglioni 19:06
Brian Davenport 19:21
Linda Mirabella 21:14 3 AG
Wayne Bell 21:34

Comments from Mike Los and Madeline Bost: This race was a USATF men’s open championship race. The Striders Open Men's team had only one Open man on it today at Bayonne; Michael Los. And for a while it looked like we would not have a team at all as we only had Mike, Charlie Castiglione, Brian Davenport and Wayne Bell. Then, because he is extrasensory, Will DeRoberts, in a last minute whim, came to the race and then there were five. Unfortunately, our masters men, valiant as they are, could not do battle with the likes of the younger men - 16th place was 16:28 - and we placed tenth, out of twelve teams. By the way, Mike ran a race the day before in 17:35, for second overall and came back and did 17:13. Way to go Michael! In finishing in tenth place the Striders Men's Open team finished 36 seconds behind SOUTH HUDSON SPIKED SHOE CLUB – who ever heard of these guys! Willie was ill and he came out to run, thanks Willie!!!! By the way we get to toss one race from the series; this was it.

And yes we can blame our fearless VP Madeline for our tenth place finish: "Remember how my Running Column prompted our guys to join Sneaker Factory because they run with them sometimes, and then they got put on the Sneaker Factory Boston Marathon team? Well, you can now blame me for the South Hudson Spiked Shoe Club. That's because I keep encouraging these mostly social running clubs, like the Shoes, and the Clifton Road Runners to compete in the team competition. And I have been very successful this year. Clifton, The Shoes, even Essex RC have put out teams this year where they normally don't. Yeah for the Liberty Waterfront Club Grand Prix!!! (Remember USATFNJ receives much needed revenue from that sponsor and we want to promote more involvement of the clubs). Sorry about that guys."

Comments from Eva: The hot weather gave way to cooler temperatures, which were perfect for racing (well, at least for some). The MCS Women came in 6th in the Open Women's Division and I thank Linda, Pam and Vicki for running along with me. We were only 52 seconds behind the 5th Team. I apologize for not being in racing shape since once I could have easily bridged that gap.

Comments from Bruce: As the races started across the beach, Steve Honthy jumped out into the lead. He was never challenged by the other runners, but was challenged by the turns on the course. Since he is now 30 years old, this was his first Woods and Lakes Run. He says that he got lost twice on the course. And he still beat me by more than two and a half minutes. Welcome back to racing, Steve. Second place in the 10K was not so cut-and-dried. I was in fourth right from the start. It was Charlie Slaughter and another runner also ahead of me. Charlie ended up to be running the 5K and he won it. The other guy faded after a half mile or so, but I didn't know it. I moved into second, but I still heard footsteps - I assumed it was him. It wasn't. It was a guy in a biking shirt. He caught up with me and to my surprise (and, I have to say, annoyance) he ran WITH me for 4 miles. I couldn't shake him and he wouldn't pull away. As we neared the narrow path in the woods, he pulled ahead. Then, a bigger surprise, when we were in the woods where a runner can easily block another from passing, he let me past. It was an adrenaline rush. I put some distance between us as best I could and concentrated on making it to the finish ahead of him. That really made my day. Thank you, Gary, for telling me, near the finish, that I had 20 seconds on him. It was exactly that much on the posted race results.
