The Striders not only had an excellent turnout, but also dominated the team competition. The winning team from Picatinny Arsenal was composed of 3 Striders: Mike Los, Bruce Langenkamp and Tom Fitzgerald. The Striders men’s team (Rory Fitzgerald (new open runner), Gonzalo Nedina, Ryan Zeek) finished in second place. The Striders women’s team (Cathy Bisson (hopefully a new member who is one of the better masters runners in the state), Linda Mirabella, Vicky Duke) finished in second place. Finally the Striders coed team (Sherry Sikora, Bill Trengove, Wayne Bell) finished in first place.
Sherry Sikora ran one of her best races as she nipped Jeanne Pare at the wire in 18:28 to win the women’s race. Sherry was also the first finisher on the Strider coed team. Ryan Zeek also had an exceptional race breaking 20 minutes.

Several new Striders led the women’s team to a 9 place finish in the team competition: Cathy Bisson (Madeline and Betty were finally able to convince her to run for the Striders), Robyn Powell and Sue Muhaw (not a new member, but still running very well). The Striders B team, which finished in 12th place, were led by April Borton, Denise Sikora and Linda Turnbull. Both teams did extremely well considering the competition they were running against (the winning team times were 17:39, 18:26 and 18:34; and the first five teams averaging under 20 minutes for the three runners).
The 50 year old men had one competitive race. Bill Bosmann first in 17:38 followed closely by Steve Kohorst and then Roger Price, who were both clocked in 17:45. Gary Wallace followed 2 seconds later in 17:47.

With the closure of Rt. 80 through Denville the day before the race, the traffic had to be routed onto Rt. 46. This forced the race course to be changed at the last minute in order to avoid closing one of the lanes on Rt. 46. The new estimated 10K course appeared to be a little long. However, it at least got rid of the hills that normally start at about 4 miles.
The race is normally run on the first hot and humid day of the summer; not this year. After raining most of the day, the rain stopped a couple of hours prior to the race. However, just as we lined up for the start of the race the heavy rains returned. Everyone was dredged before the starting gun even went off. The rain continued throughout the entire race, although not as hard. Unfortunately the roads were very wet with large puddles that were hard to avoid. Wet feet and rain does not make for a very comfortable run.
The weather did not slow some of the more adventuresome runners who not only ran this race, but also ran the William & Teresa Wright Memorial 5K in the morning (Joe Sikora and the Fishers).
The Striders who staffed the finish line should also be thanked for braving the weather. Steve Austin who organizes the finish line each year deserves special thanks.
