Jan. 1 -  Midnite Run in Central Park  4 Miles

Ron Gatzke 31:30
Dennis Rears 31:40

Story from Dennis:

Ron Gatze, Mike Hespos, Laura Hespos, and I journeyed to NYC for the annual Midnite Run in Central Park. Once again it was a great experience. Ron has now done this every year since 1985, Mike has done this several times, and this was my 4th time in the last years. This was Laura's first.

This year it was a 4 mile course instead of the old 5 mile and the previous years 5K distance. I later found out this the course had to be changed to the Parks Commission requests. They no longer wanted an out-and-back course again, since it's often too crowded, so they we were looking for a loop course that would still start/finish in the lower part of the park. The races started at the 72nd transverse went East and then turned north. At the 102nd street transverse, the course turned left and went wet and than finally south and finished back at the transverse. This was an excellent course. It was a bit slippery with the snow but there were many stretches of road with no ice or snow. Mike and Laura decided just to walk part of it. Ron and I ran it. We got to the park at about 11:35 after a nice Chinese dinner and hiding out in the car for 30 minutes. Ron and I were able to get the front of the starting with no effort. The countdown to the new century began as did the race. The start was just as spectacular as ever. The fireworks lasted for about a mile. The course was pretty clean of slow for the first two miles. At the halfway point it got slippery and we had to slow to 8 minute miles. At 3.2 mile, New York Giants Fans were practicing for their next home game by throwing snowballs at all the runners. Thankfully they missed Ron and I. We made one last left and ran the remaining 300 meters to the finish line on the transverse. Going home we hit some traffic near Times Square but it was entertaining to watch the well dressed people walking home so drunk they could barely stand. We almost made a game out of trying to spot the most trashed people. Over all another good time. Everyone should try this race next year.

Comments from Bruce - After having Dennis send the application to the Strider e-mail list and making copies of the application for handouts on Wednesday, I was the only Strider to run the race. I had come in FIRST PLACE last year in this race. This year I had to go back and try to win again. But it wasn't to happen. At the start, a female took the lead - I couldn't let that happen, so I ended up running faster than I really wanted to at the start. The course was the same as last year, going three times around Station Park. A little less than half of the loop is on roads, then most of the rest is on grass (covered with some snow both last year and this) with a trail through a woodsy section and a wooden footbridge across a stream. The roads were clear, the grass and trails had been plowed down to about an inch of powdery snow. I was in the lead until about halfway through the first loop when Bill Bosmann passed me and kept going. For some reason, he was getting much better traction in the snow. Halfway through the second loop, a guy named Rich (who I had met at last year's Mountain Challenge 15K) passed me. He also seemed to be getting better traction. I followed him all the way to the finish line but he just wouldn't let me catch up with him. I might be mistaken, but I think the next runner to finish was that female who was off to such a nice fast start. The award ceremony was short - with one prize for the first male (Bosmann) and one prize for the first female. Next year, I'll try not to get so fat over the Holiday Season - I can't let that Bosmann character beat me like that again. By the way, Bosmann was in third place last year - and he lives in Sparta, this is his home turf.

Newark Distance Classic 20K: 4 March 2001

Bogden Bienko 1:31:44
Mike Hespos 1:33:32
Vicky Duke 1:37:34
Henry Pontious 1:38:21 3 AG

Is that really Bruce running a 20K without anyone twisting his arm or convincing him it’s for the good of the team? Once again his old nemesis, Bill Bosmann, beat him again. At least they got the race in before the snow arrived.

Steve Kohorst made his debut for 2001 (look out 50 year olds), a year in which he hopes to turn a few heads. Unfortunately, Steve was beaten not only by Bill Bosmann, but by a baby! Steve battled valiantly against a strong wind, but was beaten not only by the wind, but by a baby. Let me explain. There is a very fast stroller pushing guy (I guess it's a "race-stroller"), and the guy was going pretty fast - 5:26 at the mile. He finished ahead of Steve, as did his passenger, a toddler. Hence, Steve was "beaten by a baby"! Hopefully, this will be funny later in the year when Steve is kicking butt.

CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE YEAR SO FAR!!!
