Charlottesville, VA Ten Mile Run: 7 April 2001

Bruce Langenkamp 63:34 34 OA / 2nd AG

I took Friday afternoon off from work and Betty and I drove through the rain to Virginia. It was about 6:30 in the evening when we arrived. It was clouded over and warm but not raining. We partied it up with our friends 'til it was time to rest for the big race. My friend was on the injured list and was not running, but he had graciously offered to put us up for the weekend if I wanted to come down to run. The race was scheduled to begin at 7:45 in the morning. It was hot all night long. I found it difficult to sleep. Was it pre-race jitters, or the heat? At race time, it was T-shirt and shorts weather, 70 to 75 degrees and very humid. The race began. I had to keep convincing myself to run. The first mile was 6:00 and I knew there would be no record pace today. Mile 2 12:01. Mile 3 I decided that I had to either relax or I might not finish 18:18. Then the times started to go down the tubes, so I won't bother repeating them. At every water stop, I grabbed cups of water and dumped them on my head. Finally, the Finish Line came. Thank Goodness. And it was the worst Ten-Mile time I had ever done. Even the Picatinny Ten in December 1998 when I hadn't trained for two months - I ran faster (63:28). I thought that maybe everyone else would be in the same boat. But when I told a teenager who had beaten me that I hoped I was the first runner over 50 years old, an old guy stepped up and said, "I'm 50!" The award ceremony was almost two hours later (Southerners do things more slowly). I finally found out that I was second in age and not third or fourth. [Thanks for taking up valuable web space. -GW]

The Striders had an incredible turnout at Boston, with 3 teams participating! Mike Los and Bill Gray had super runs - Bill Gray finally beat his brother's time and says he can now retire from marathons. I had a great time watching the race unfold by watching the Boston Marathon web site with splits every 5k. I "watched" Mike Los sneak up and pass Laurie, Bill Gray come from way back and pass Gene, and was happy to see when everybody finished.

Cherry Blossom 10K: 22 April 2001
Gary Wallace 37:02 1 A
Steve Kohorst 37:54 2 AG
Tom Fitzgerald 39:55
Steve Austin 47:09
Richard Hotchkiss 48:33

A very hot day! Steve K. & Gary W. paired up, Steve A. & Richard H. paired up driving down to Branch Brook Park  and were welcomed by miles and miles of cherry trees in peak blossom! Steve vowed to destroy Bosmann - unfortunately he didn't show up. With Roger Price out of the picture (injury), Gary & Steve dominated the 50+ NJ age group. It was the open women's championship - unfortunately nary a single Striders woman was there (except for Madeline who didn't run). Hopefully, we will get some teams together in the upcoming races.

Woods and Lakes Runs: 28 April 2001

The Striders had a good turnout at the Woods and Lakes Runs. The weather was great and the Woods condition was the best in years.

This was the Men's Open 5K Championships. Conditions were good, with the longest hill you've ever seen in a 5K race near the end - over 1 mile long! Bill Gray (16:51) ran a tough race 12 days after the Boston Marathon to lead the Striders. Bruce Park is back on the scene and finished a strong 2nd (17: 12) for the team, followed by Mike Los in 17:34 (who also ran Boston). Gary Wallace & Steve Kohorst slipped in to round out the scorers. Gary won the 50's division & Richard Hotchkiss won the 60's division.
Although this was the best open team for the Striders in some time, we only managed a 6th place. At least everyone is turning out and making a great effort. Good work.

JERSEY SHORE MARATHON: 29 April 2001
Steve Fisher  3:17:56

Steve was very happy with this performance. In spite of "hitting the wall" at 14, as he says, he kept plugging away to run his 2nd fastest time for the distance. An impromptu party was thrown at his house upon his arrival home, attended by Gary Wallace. PS - His training partner, Wendy Locke, with whom he rode down and back, and who lives nearby, won the Women's race (3:04) and a trip to Sweden for the Stockholm Marathon! Good going, training partners. (Also see Steve's New Stuff  for full details and then some!)

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
