On September 3rd, Betty joined a new age group. She has been looking forward to
it because there was the
Run2Finish 5K run in Boonton (where she grew up) and she wanted to get an age
group award on her birthday. She did that and more. Betty's parents came to the
race to watch. Course marshals called out Happy Birthday greetings. The Striders
had a men's and a women's team. After the end of the race, the results were
posted and we had to update the Compuscore data base that still had Betty as a
49 year old. When Betty went up to accept her age group award, the announcer
asked her to wait as they pulled out a helium balloon that said Happy 50th
Birthday and everyone sang Happy Birthday. After all this, no one seemed to
notice that the Strider women took 1st place in the team competition. The girl
with the birthday balloon had her age group prize AND a team prize.

A beautiful night for racing led to some very fast times. Brian Boyett, a local
high school runner from Parsippany won the race in 15:23. Many of you may
recognize him since he has run in the Striders series for the past couple of
years. Many of the Striders also ran very well. Linda Mirabella ran her fastest
time of the year just missing her goal of breaking 21 minutes. Betty easily set
a PR by over 30 seconds. Bruce thought that he had run under 18 minutes, but
when he looked at the official time it was 18:00. On the other hand I managed to
just break 20 minutes finishing in 19:59.
As always, with over 1500 runners, the start of the race is very chaotic. This year was no exception. Chris and I managed to position ourselves within sight of the starting line. The race started suddenly when the starter just fired the starting gun. I took off and did not realize that Chris was tripped after about 4 steps. She landed very hard on her hands and legs scraping her elbow, knees and hands. After a short period of time she was able to get up without anyone running into her. In spite of the injuries she was still able to run faster than last year and for the third year in a row finished in the top three in her age group. After the race Chris stopped at the first aid station and they applied the biggest bandage that you can imagine.
The Striders women’s team, led by a bunch of 40 year old runners finished in second place just ahead of the Livingston High School cross country team. The Striders men’s team did not do as well finishing in fourth place just behind the Livingston High School cross country team.

The Striders open men’s team had a great day finishing in fifth place.
Janet did an excellent job finding 5 runners for the women’s team.
Unfortunately they were only able to finish in tenth place and did not receive
any team points.
Below left: Steve Kohorst finishing....
Below right: Steve's view of Tom Fitzgerald for much of race...
Webmaster addendum: Very humid day, 70's! Striders ran well as a team (as
in together), with myself (GW) dropping off around 7 and then making a comeback
of sorts. Gene came out of hiding and led the way - welcome back! Tom Fitzgerald
ran really tough, never letting up - despite Steve Kohorst's wishes to the
contrary. It was good
to see the women put a team together (the men's open team doesn't always) -
congrats to all who toed the line and finished!!
P.S. Joel was rounding into top shape and suffered a foot injury before race
time - best wishes for a speedy recovery. - Webby

A beautiful night for racing resulted in some very fast times. Fouzi Aloui won the race in 14:50 with Brian Boyett, a local high runner who ran the Striders summer series, finishing second in 15:33. With Roger Price getting an overall Masters award, the 50 year age group award came down to Gary Wallace passing both Bill Bosmann and Bruce Langenkamp toward the end of the race. Bruce lost out to Bill by 3 seconds with all three runners finishing within 5 seconds of each other. Scott Fawcett was the third Strider to finish with the team taking second place. The women’s team also finished in second place.
At 2 miles Betty was on track to set another PR when a stitch in her side caused her to walk for a while. She still was able to run her second fastest time. Chris also ran her fastest time in two years when she set a PR at this very race. Alice Guerrieri was the lucky winner of one of the $50 raffles. Fortunately someone told her that she had won, since she was not paying attention to the announcer who was calling out the winning numbers.
Thanks for the quick results, Joel!!
