Comments from Tom: The race started early, 8:00 AM so the heat wasn't too much of a factor. The course is one big loop, with a 2 ½ mile straight away on one of the roads. The 5K and 10K start together, but veer off on different courses after the first ¼ mile. They meet up again at the finish. This is where I screwed up big time. Coming down the stretch, I saw that I would have to kick it in to get under 38 Minutes. I was concentrating on the clock, and went into the 5K shoot. When I didn't see my name on the Compuscore van's screen, I asked the guys in the truck what happened. They asked me if I gave in my tear off from the race number. I told them I gave it to the man at the end of the shoot. They said that if I gave it to a man, I entered the 5K shoot. They corrected the results, but had me in 3rd place instead of 4th. They announced the results this way at the award ceremony. When I told them I came in 4th, not 3rd, they insisted I take the 3rd place award check and Cheesecake. I met the real 3rd place guy, and gave him his awards and got the official results corrected.
May 8: "That's life, that's what people say. You're riding' high in April, Shot down in May. But I know I'm gonna change that tune, When I'm back on top in June." I never thought Sinatra sang running songs, but this one's appropriate. I was out on a trail run with Mike Los and Jim Murnane on a hot Monday afternoon. Half way into the trail, I must have clipped a rock. I thought I heard something snap as I was going down. Luckily, it wasn't too serious, only a grade 2 ankle sprain. I had it x-rayed at St. Clare's. They gave me an air cast, a shot in the butt, and 600mg Motrin. My ortho, Dr. Capecci, told me I should start exercising it in a week, but don't run for 3 weeks. He said the pounding from running will prevent the ligament from healing properly. I'll probably skip Midland, but Ridgewood is still a possibility.

Someone did not take into account that it would be 95 degrees when they scheduled this race to start at 1:00. However, with lots of money up for grabs for open and age graded runners, some of the Striders decided to run this race rather than the 20K open championship race that was held on the same day. It was financially the right decision for both Bruce and Steve, with Bruce winning $125 and Steve winning $75. Unfortunately Roger Price showed up and was the first aged graded masters runner.
MapleLeaf 10K: 7 May 2000
Bill Trengove 39:05 2 OA / 1 AG
There will be a story about this race! No one even made it to the finish line and no one knows how far they ran, according to Bill, because a course marshall sent everyone the wrong way. To make matters worse, someone Bill beat was awarded 2nd place after Bill left for home. More to be told. The more: Actually, not that many finished wrong. Anyway, a happy ending (for Bill Trengove fans). Bill got his 500 points and that's what happened.

Thanks to Mike Los’ organization, the Striders were able to enter a men’s open team in this USATF championship race and finished in sixth place. The three points that we earned in this one race puts us only two point behind the total that the open team earned all of last year. Let’s see if we can continue to improve. Unfortunately we did not have enough runners to enter a women’s team, since Madeline was the only Strider to run.
About a quarter of a mile into the race Roger Price jogs up along side me. I am running pretty hard, so I ask him why he is running so slowly; I am not used to running with Roger during any part of the race. He says that he has been running a lot of races and plans to take it easy for the first mile, and then run hard for the rest of the race. So we run together for the first mile, Roger jogging along barely working up a sweat, and me breathing really heavy. After finishing the first mile in 6:17 Roger takes off like he was shot out of a cannon and is still able to catch Bruce at about the four mile mark and beat him by 15 seconds. I did manage to keep a pretty even pace for the entire race, only slowing down for the one hill that starts at about the 2 mile mark. The last 2.5 miles of the race are very fast as long as you don’t expend too much energy on the one hill, which I did not do.

After three days of rain and predictions for a wet race day, the runners should have been ready for some bad race conditions. However, the amount of mud and wet conditions even exceeded my expectations. I got to the race early and managed to park on some very soggy grass off of a dirt (actually mud) road. By the time that I walked from my car to the Strider’s tent my feet were soaked and covered with mud. Fortunately Bruce brought a larger tent than normal, which kept us dry after the race after it started to rain again. The only problem was setting up the tent, since it did not come with very good instructions. After several false starts we finally got it up. All it took was a few engineers and a blonde (Betty) to figure it out. In spite of the bad weather all the Striders showed up to run in the race and picnic later on.
The start of the race was changed significantly from previous years with the 5K starting 5 minutes before the 15K. The starting location was also moved, although it still started in a grassy area and quickly narrowed down to run along the dirt road that I had driven on. By then the road was even muddier with deep mud along the side of the road that you could lose your running shoes in (Madeline ran in boots until we got to the paved road in order to avoid this problem). Once we turned onto the mud road, there was a truck that blocked the road and forced the runners onto an even narrower path in the deeper mud; I ended up having to walk around the truck. By the time that we had turned onto the paved road everyone was covered in mud. It looked more like a cross-country race than a road race. The majority of the race was the same as it had been in previous years. However, the finish of the race was changed to run further up the road before turning back onto the grounds. The race then ran along a dirt road and up a hill before turning right and heading downhill to the finish line. However, prior to reaching the finish line the runners had to once more navigate the grassy area where the race had started. After running 9 miles it was like running on a sponge and made it very difficult to kick to the finish line.
Web Master's addendum: The high light of the whole day occurred at the end of the day - Many large trucks were totally stuck in deep mud! Some macho guys driving around in a "Monster Truck" all afternoon finally showed us why they were even there for: to pull trucks out of the mud. One truck was stuck so badly that 2 "Monster Trucks" couldn't budge it. The heavy artillary came - a bulldozer! That worked. Great entertainment for those who stayed till the end!!!
The Striders entered teams in every division and did extremely well with the women doing better than the men:
Women’s Open team: 7th place
Women’s 40 year old Masters team: 3rd place
Women’s 50 year old Masters team: 1st place
Women’s 60 year old Master team: 1st place
Men’s Open team: 8th place
Men’s 40 year old Masters team: 4th place
Men’s 50 year old Masters team: 2nd place
Men’s 60 year old Master team: 1st place
Just a note that it always pays to enter a team as long as there are a sufficient number runners. The women’s 50 year old team was made of the same runners as the 60 year old team. However, since there were no other 50 year old teams entered the Striders got first place, the mugs that go along with first place, and 10 points for the overall team championship.

It was just two days until Midland. Picatinny had a 5K run at 10:30 on a Friday morning. Mike and I talked about whether we should go all-out or should we save some for Sunday. I told him that I was going to treat it as a competition. Chad McKonly and Jim Murnane each decided to save their efforts for Sunday. So, Mike, Charlie and I ran together for the first ¾ of a mile - then Charlie dropped back. With less than a mile to go, Mike and I were dead even - neither of us wanted to ease off and let the other one win. But, as we rounded the next to last turn, I got a half step lead because I was on the inside and I took off. I kept the pace almost to the finish line when I glanced back to see that Mike had decided to jog in and save himself for Midland. Mike had beaten me in the Autumn Picatinny 5K; I just couldn't let him do it twice in a row.
