THE MORRIS COUNTY STRIDERS RACE RESULTS
JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH

(AG = Age Group, OA = Overall, AGM = Age Graded Master)

Chicken Soup Loop 10K NYC: 23 January 00

Gene Mizzoni 36:08 15 OA
Bob Dyer 45:41 182 OA
Jim Romer 49:04 282 OA
Dennis Rears 50:53 344 OA

It is winter and it was cold: 18 degrees. First 10K for Dennis since May of 1998. If Striders run NYRRC club races put Morris County Striders or (MCS) as team name. It makes it easier to compile results.

GridIron 5K, Central Park: 30 January 00

Mike Los 17:33 59 OA
Dennis Rears 22:43 409 OA
Jim Romer 25:29 678 OA
Alice Guerrieri 43:56 (includes 3+ minutes to reach starting line)

The first two miles of this course was the same as last week's Chicken Soup Loup 10K. There is a killer hill right before the two mile marker. These races are widely attended with 1636 total finishers. Even though it was only 31 degrees, the course was mostly free of ice and snow.

USATF-NJ Winter Cross Country: 28 January 00

Tom Fitzgerald 47:26 23 OA

Sparta Frost Bite Road and Trail 5(?)K: 5 February 00

Bruce Langenkamp 19:55 1 OA
Charlie Castiglioni 21:48 6 OA
Bob Dyer 24:20 9 OA
Madeline Bost 29:50

Comments from Bruce: There was much anticipation about this run. Tom Fitzgerald found the race announcement on the web and it was sent to all Striders who had an e-mail address. Also, Madeline wrote her Sunday column in the Daily Record about the race. There were sure to be many anxious race-hungry runners. Race day was sunny and cold with a slight breeze. Where were the runners? Were they frightened away by the snow on the ground? The roads on the course were clean and the trails had been plowed down to less than an inch of snow in most spots. You couldn't get lost on the trails unless you wanted to wade through mounds of snow. We were told that the run would be 3 loops around the park - and this year no extra loops were added. Everything went smoothly. Right from the start, I was in the lead, with Bill Bosmann following closely behind me. I finally shook him somewhere in the last loop. Then, just before I got to the Finish line, I lapped Madeline. She said it was quite different for her to be able to watch the finish of the race while being a competitor also. I had won the race - I told some of the spectators that I thought my winning days were over when I turned 50, but thank goodness they aren't over quite yet.

NYRRC Lucky Seven Mile Reversible: 6 February 00

Bob Dyer 49:24 114 OA
Jim Romer 58:07

Comments from LIM-MARK Computer Sports Inc. Saturday, February 19, 2000. . .Seaside Heights, NJ. A season opener for sure, and correctly titled as the Chill-Out. Let's see weather-wise, we had it all within 24 hours. One day prior to race day: In North Jersey, about 5-12 inches of snow, South Jersey 1-3 inches snow, PA 1-3 inches . . . well you get the idea. But, in Seaside Heights itself, only rain. With the beer "on ice", pasta to go, calls coming in like crazy (please no race tomorrow from the northern areas -- to yes lets run, from the more southern areas). Tough decision, but it was a "go" since who knows what it would do next week-end. Well, some worry because early in the morning part of the ten mile course on Bayview Drive, was under water. But. . .by 9 a.m. it was cleared and the entire certified 5K & 10 Mile courses were a go.

Don't you just love these hardy winter time runners! Fired up, and nothing is going to stop them. The wind was certainly a factor but we believe that the times still showed the strength of today's runners. First OVERALL 5K MALE, Gary Rosenberg, 29 yrs. old, Boonton, NJ had miss-information on the start of the 10 Miler, but literally jumped into the 5K to claim first in 16:44. Timothy Horn, Brick, NJ followed up in 17:09, with Hal Smith closing quickly to take third overall in 17:19. First OVERALL 5K FEMALE, Janice Morra, 41 yrs. old, Central Nyack, NY, beat the snow in NY and the female field in a time of 19:03. Giving chase in second overall was Amy O'Donnell, 25 yrs. old, Toms River, NJ in 19:18. Myrna Rosal, Carteret, NJ took 3rd overall in 20:59.

FIRST 5K MASTER ROB HADLEY, 42 yrs. old, Pt. Pleasant, NJ kicked it in to finish with 19:07, following closely was Dave Hoch, 44 yrs.old, Hopewell, NJ in 20 flat. From Mays Landing, NJ Charles Pritchard, 48 yrs. old, claimed 3rd master overall in 20:17.FIRST 5K FEMALE MASTER now goes to Kathryn Tell, 45 yrs. old, Bradley Beach, NJ in 21:59 (Janice Morra was removed since she claimed first female overall). Second female master overall was Carleen Hornish, 40 yrs. old, Pt. Pleasant, NJ in 26:06

Our hardy 10 Milers were not to be outdone by the weather either, good times under tough conditions. FIRST OVERALL MALE 10 MILER - J.R. Meloro, 27 yrs. old, Oradell, NJ finished strong in 53:15. Closing quickly in second overall was Mark Zamek, 36 yrs.old, Belle Mead, NJ in 53:37; and Carlos Martins, 30 yrs. old, Kearney, NJ claiming third overall male in 54:46. FIRST OVERALL FEMALE 10 MILER - Karu Proffitt, 43 yrs. old, Staten Island, NY also finished strong in 1:05:12. Icona Bella, 28 yrs. old, Edison, NJ finished in a fine 1:06:45; and Kasey Manwaring, 21 yrs. old, Ossining, NY took third overall in 1:07:32. It certainly was a day for female masters who took first overall in the 5K and 10 Miler. How does that saying go . . . "You're not getting older baby, you're getting better."

FIRST OVERALL MALE MASTER 10 MILER: BRIAN DRISCOLL, 41 yrs. old, Aston, PA also finished strong in 57:48, with Roger Price, 51 yrs. old, Piscataway, NJ had a "most excellent finish" in 58:13; and Patrick Seaney, 44 yrs. old, Cherry Hill, NJ claimed third master in 1:00:56. FIRST OVERALL FEMALE MASTER 10 MILER: Kari Proffitt, 43 yrs.old, Staten Island, NY also had a good race on a tough day with a final time of 1:05:12. Eva Fisher, 40 yrs. old, Boonton, NJ claimed second female master overall in 1:13:38, and giving a close chase for third female overall master was Patrice Hancock, 45 yrs. old, Toms River, NJ.

For early March the balmy weather was a pleasant surprise. For those of you who have run this race before, the course has not changed with the same nasty hill that starts at about 2.5 miles. At least the race finishes by running down the same hill.

The two lead runners finished in a near dead heat in 1:00:46; that is a really fast 4:53 pace.. Tom Bowmaster has turned 40 and easily won the masters division in 1:09:22. The top woman (from Canada) finished in 1:13:02 with the first master finishing in 1:20:53.

The Striders men's and women's team both got off to good starts finishing in third place.

Spring into Shape 5K:

Steve Austin 21:19 2 AG / PR

Comments from Steve: A few weeks ago I was in Palm Beach, Florida visiting family, and found a local 5k race called Spring into Shape. My time was 21:19, which is a PR, and I came in 2nd in my age. Most of the races in Florida start at 8am due to the heat. This day was no different. At the start of the race the temperature was about 80. I'm not used to sweating yet, but the runners down there are. The week before this race they had a 10 miler, and in another week or two, a 1/2 marathon. That’s much to hot for snowbirds to run this time of year.

It wouldn't be the Red Dog if it wasn't windy and cold. The sun didn't even make an appearance until after the race was over. It didn't phase the runners as 394 managed to finish the race. The course was the same as last year where we ran along the bay side for a couple of miles rather than run into Island Beach. The Striders entered three teams with the men's 50 team finishing second, the men's 40 team finishing third and the women's 40 team finishing fourth.

CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE YEAR SO FAR!!!
