THE MORRIS COUNTY STRIDERS RACE RESULTS
AUGUST
AG = Age Group, OA = Overall, AGM = Age Graded Master
Steve Kohorst 17:21 1 AG
Steve Kohorst 36:51 1 AG
Comments from Steve: I ran at corporates in Seattle this weekend and ran a 17:21 5k so I think I am back in the action. I won my age in both the 5K and 10K, but the 10K time was slower (36:51) due to the fact that I had to run a 600 on the track the afternoon of the 5K. It took a little wind out of my sails. Then the afternoon of the 10K I had to run a 400 on the track and I was toast.

Nancy Grabow showed up at the race to bid farewell to the Striders; she has accepted a new position in West Palm Beach, Florida. She only had about a week from the time she was offered the position until she had to be there. Even though she did not run in this race, she did pace Betty to an excellent time in spite of the heat. Nancy thanked everybody and indicated that she has really enjoyed running with the Striders the past couple of years. We all wish her the best of luck and hope that she enjoys running at 4:00AM, which is the only time when it is cool enough in the summer for running.

This was the first race that Chris and I had run in quite a while; I hadn’t raced since Midland in May, and Chris had not run in a race since last October. Due to various injuries and surgery in February, Chris had not been able to run much. However, for the past several weeks she has been feeling physically good, which has allowed her to run without any pain; so in spite of the hot weather, Chris ran very well finishing within a few seconds of her time last year. While my time was over two minutes slower than the last five mile race that I ran in the Spring, it felt good to be out racing again.
The Striders were able to enter three masters teams in the USATF championship. The men’s 40 team finished in fourth place. The men’s 50 team and the women’s 40 team both finished in second place. Unfortunately we did not enough people to enter teams in the other divisions; only two men over sixty and two women over 50 ran in the race (both teams require at least three runners). This proved to be unfortunately since there were no other teams entered in these categories, so we would have won just by having three runners. In many cases our teams can do very well by just having a high level of participation even if you do not feel that you are a very good runner. This definitely proved to be the case on our 50 year old team, where we had just enough runners for the team, with Wes Beal being the fifth runner. Without him, we would not have been able to enter a team and get 8 points for the second place finish.
If you would like to run on one of the Strider’s teams, then just let the team coordinator know (either myself, Mike Los or Eva Fisher). The only requirement is that you need to be a USATF member, and the right age and sex for the type of event. For this race the women’s team contained two new members: Sherri Jubin and Alissa Okrent. Both ran very well, and even though they did not figure in the team scoring, they should be able to contribute in future events.
Thanks for the quick results, Joel!!
