THE MORRIS COUNTY STRIDERS RACE RESULTS
APRIL

(AG = Age Group, OA = Overall, AGM = Age Graded Master)

Charlottesville, Virginia Ten Mile Run: 1 April 2000

Bruce Langenkamp 60:19 1 AG

Bruce was the first Morris County Strider and 23rd place of almost 2000 finishers. Who else would be down in Virginia. For the whole story, click here: Comments from Bruce.

New Providence 10K: 2 April 2000

Gene Mizzoni 37:26
Tom Bobsein 38:24 3 AG
Joe Sikora 39:51 3 AG
Ron Ayre 40:30 1 AG
Eva Fisher 44:18 1 AG

Jim Romer 46:00
Vicky Duke 47:12 3 AG
Nancy Grabow 48:26
Henry Pontious 48:48 3 AG
Janet Polizois 48:53 2 AG

Eva is running extremely well this year. Not only did Eva win her age group, but she was also the first master’s woman finisher. Steve Fisher was supposed to run the race with her, but the very fast 9 mile training run that he did earlier in the morning was probably too much. See related article: Fisher Does It Again .

Betty Langenkamp 30:36

For the first time the weather really cooperated with this early April race. In fact it was the first time that people were complaining that it was too warm. I personally thought that the temperature was much better than in past years. The Striders’ Masters teams continue to do very well in the USATF championships. The men’s 40 team finished in fourth place, the men’s 50 team finished in second place and the women’s 40 team finished in third place.

Mountain Challenge 3K: 15 April 2000

Steve Yaros 16:38 2 AG
Betty Langenkamp 18:30 1 AG

Not only did Betty win her age group, but she also was the first female masters finisher. Unfortunately she was not the first USATF finisher, so she did not receive the 500 points that she got last year.

Mountain Challenge 15K: 15 April 2000

Bruce Langenkamp 1:05:29 5 OA
Steve Fisher 1:11:23 7 OA
Will DeRoberts 1:16:42
Eva Fisher 1:20:16 3 OA
Jim Romer 1:23:56

Steve Fisher said that the hills in this race are tougher than any hills that he does during his training runs with Gary. That must make them really difficult, because Gary and Steve are known for doing extremely difficult training runs (You have NO idea - Webby)

Cherry Blossom 10K 16 April 2000

Gene Mizzoni 35:36 4OA / 3AG
Tom Fitzgerald 37:00 10OA / 2 AG
Mike Los 37:44 13OA
Joel Ange 41:46
Steve Fisher 42:36
Eva Fisher 45:09
Nancy Grabow 47:57
Madeline Bost 52:31 1AG

This was Mike Los’ first race since he injured his knee. The six weeks that he took off does not seem to have affected him since he ran the same time that he did last year. However, he wasn’t quite fast enough to catch Tom Fitzgerald. Both Steve and Eva ran in the mountain challenge race the day and somehow were still able to make it through this race.

Even though Madeline did not plan on running in the race, she did volunteer to run in order to fill out the women’s team (we needed 3 runners and only Nancy and Eva showed up). With Madeline’s help the women’s team was able to finish in sixth place.

Millennium Main Street 5K (Sparta): 22 April 2000

Bruce Langenkamp 17:50 1AG
Claudia Monse 36:48 5AG

Comments from Bruce: It was a cool damp morning with the threat of rain. We had the whole width of the three-lane road to run on. Why did those two kids (a boy and a girl - each about 10 years old) line up to my left and within the first 50 yards or so want to get to the right hand side of the road? The boy made it, inches in front of me. The girl almost made it, but as she passed in front of me, my right knee brushed her leg and down she went. She was back up quickly and no one else was affected - but what a way to start the race. After I shook it off, I found myself just running on autopilot. The only reason I woke up was because Bosmann passed me near the top of the last hill. I knew it was the last hill and I gathered myself up and put on a "kick." I passed him back and finished just seconds ahead of him. He came over and asked "Were you in fifth?" As it turns out, I was the sixth male overall and they were giving 5 money prizes from $400 for first to $50 for 5th. We checked the results board and saw that I was in 7th place with a 60 year old female in front of me at 17:26. WOW!! Check that out, Madeline. Later, the age was corrected to 19 to 29. And the Male in 5th place was 18 years old. Andy Ball (race director) informed me that he was going to confirm his eligibility before awarding the $50. If he is ineligible due to being in school, the $50 will go to me. Thank you NCAA and Bill Bosmann for letting me outkick you.

Carol Krah 29:51 1 AG
Betty Langenkamp 29:51 2 AG

Woods and Lakes 10K: 29 April 2000

Joe Defeo 35:37 1 OA
Bruce Langenkamp 36:32 2 OA / 1 AG
Gary Wallace 38:43 2 AG
Steve Fisher 40:17
Will Deroberts 41:39
Eva Fisher 43:54 2 AG
Vicky Duke 46:56
Henry Pontious 47:02 1 AG
Ann Gillespie 51:46 1 AG
Doug Halkenhauser 55:27
Barry Hildebrand 55:36
William Delaar 61:17
Janine Maltas 1:17:22 1 AG

Comments from Bruce: The weather forecast for the end of the week (and into Saturday) was RAIN. The trails in the Woods and Lakes were sure to be full of mud. The committee had planned ahead and put down mulch in the worst spots. It was a carpet of maybe 4 inches of soft footing - very nice unless you were trying to run on top of it. Then it didn't rain. The trails were nice and dry. The sun was even shining the whole time. It was a great race. As I neared the end of the run, I turned around to find another runner right on my heels. Dennis was watching as I ran across the sand to the finish line and even widened the gap between the other guy and myself. Someone with a worse finishing kick than mine. Thank goodness. In the 10K, the awards (bottles of champagne) went three deep in the 10 year age groups; but in the 5K, they were only for the first place in each age. Betty was second in age to Ken Krah's wife Carol. She got the bottle - Congrats to Carol who has joined in her family's running tradition.

New Jersey Shore Marathon: 30 April 2000

Tom Fitzgerald 2:55:32 10 OA / 1 AG
Janet Polizois  4:08:08   PR!

Comments from Tom: This had to be the most satisfying result since I started running. I ran 11 previous marathons, but never broke 3 Hours. In my last one in 1997, I ran 3:01:19 at the Jersey Shore Marathon and blew the 3 hour mark by running 8:30's the last 2 miles. I think the big difference this year was the gel I took during the race. I sucked down 4 packs during the run, and would get a surge at about 2 miles after I took it.

The first 4 miles of the race were into the wind. The wind that day was from the Northwest and was pretty substantial. During the next 14 mile I had the wind at my back. I was clocking 6:30 -6:35 miles with little effort. At mile 18 we turned into the wind. At the 20mile mark, I thought

I was hitting the wall, but then the last gel pack kicked in. (No need to call USATF on me for a urine sample, this stuff was just Power Gel). The way the course goes, miles 20 through 22.5 are with the wind at your back (going South). The last 3 ½ are into the wind heading back North to the finish at Long Branch High School track. When I passed the 23 mile split, I knew that I only had to run 9 minute miles to make it under 3 Hours. I slowed down to 7:15's over the last 3, but didn't hit the wall as I had on most of my previous marathons.

Luckily the race was not the following week, May 7. The temps were in the 90's and would have fried us all.

CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE YEAR SO FAR!!!
