Run for the Roses 5K, Roseland NJ: 3 June 2000
Bruce Langenkamp 17:19 1 OA Congratulations for the
words below with no spellling error.
Betty Langenkamp 29:27
Madeline tells us that there were 6 races this weekend - and it was a great weekend to be running. The Roseland 5K doesn't have any USATF points and their advertising consisted of mailing to last year's finishers and a stack of flyers at last week's Ridgewood runs. Maybe that's why only about 80 contestants were there on Saturday. In any event, it was great to be in the lead once again. Last year, I won the race in 17:19. Imagine my surprise when I approached the finish line and the time once again said 17:19 - I am in a rut. Jim Grizetti also repeated as the second finisher with a time within seconds of last year's. Betty was finishing strong and tried to pass another female runner, but didn't quite make it. The other woman was 3rd in the 40-49 age group, Betty was fourth. Last year she was first in the age group.

Run for the Roses normally takes place on one of the first hot and humid days of the years. By the afternoon the temperature was already in the 90s with the humidity almost as high. I was glad that I had decided to volunteer to help at the race rather than run. However, by the time that the race started at 7:00, the temperature had fallen, and it was actually conformable standing around at the finish line; so why did all the runners look totally wilted when they finished. The runners who looked the worst got ice from the medical team that was on-site. Dennis of course got the award for looking the worst and was assisted from the finish line. A few minutes later he was doing OK and was happy with his race; his longest race in about two years. For the second race in a row Sherry Sikora managed to beat her father. Welcome to the reality of getting older.
Steve Austin did an excellent job organizing the Striders who had volunteered to help at the finish line. There were more than enough of us to handle the finish line chores. If you haven’t volunteered to help at a race, then consider it in the future when you do not plan on running. All the runners appreciate the help, and many personally thanked us as they exited the finishing area. There was even a party after the race for the volunteers.

This was my 10th race of the year. I like this race. Despite having over 400 runners it still feels like a small local race. I guess it is because most of the people doing this race are not the ones who typically show up at most NJ races. This was the 9th running of the event. They feed you pasta, garlic bread, fruit, and soda after the race. It is held on ADP corporate campus. The course has one long hill that ends near the second mile. There is a turnaround about 1/3 of a mile before the end of the race so you can see where you are in relation to the field. Congratulations on a fine race to one of our newest members, Sherri Jubin.

Comments from David Bell: I may be one of the lesser-known members of the club, partially because I often teach evenings and don't make it to many Striders' activities other than races. But, I'm pleased to report that my 22:27 time at the first Striders 5K at Picatinny Tuesday night was a personal best, exceeding a previous PR of 22:45 I ran in Rockland, NY, in 1987. To the six-minute-per-mile crew it may seem like jogging, but I was pretty pleased. I had to run hard over the last mile because Vicky Duke and Sherri Jubin were closing fast, and they've already beaten me too many times to count.
Gene got a taste of running with the lead pack as he lead the race at about the 2 mile point. However, two runners finished slightly ahead of him as he struggled to catch them at the finish. Sherry Sikora continues to run extremely well since she has returned from school. She was running track this past Spring (primarily 1500 meters), which may explain why she is running so fast. This was the third race in a row that she finished ahead of her father. Betty is also running very well as she is preparing to enter a new age group this fall (look out all you 50 year old runners). Madeline ran under 24 minutes for the first time in quite a while as she prepares for various track races on the west coast later this summer.
Thanks for the quick results, Joel!!
