Anyone who was lucky enough to get a tee shirt at this race will surely cherish it for some time. Jan Kristiansen (race director) indicated that the local Shop-Rite was a major sponsor of the race and said that they took care of acquiring and printing the shirts. They were obviously not into the running scene because there was not indication on the shirt that there was a race involved. The front of the shirt in big bold letters was Ship-Rite of Rockaway, and the back of the shirt was the Rotary club. Since I volunteered to help at the race, I was one of the lucky ones to get one of the keepsakes.

For one time Gene managed to have a race strategy and actually followed it. When he went by me the first time he was not up with the leaders. However, the second time he passed me after the hill on Rockaway Blvd., Gene was in third place and closing on the second place runner. He looked strong and managed to finish in second place.

Betty is continuing to run very well and is closing in on 29 minutes. She attributes her improvements to the Wednesday runs where she runs with people who run faster than she does. Janet Polizois, who is the most well dressed and color coordinated runner on the Striders, continues to run very well. She also has a very effortless running style, which is probably why her running has continued to improve.

This was a day to see some old faces. Bill Shuler ran a race for the first time in quite a while; he set a PR for this year. He indicated that he did not want to run too fast so he could continue to improve as the year goes on. Bill Hagman showed that he has been doing some serious training somewhere as he easily beat Ron Ayre in the 55 to 59 age group. Scott Fawcett, who used to train with the Striders has gotten back into running. He said that it is much more difficult to get back in shape at 32 then it was at 22. However, after running for only 2 months he is already down to 18:06, which isn’t too bad. For those of you who don’t remember Scott, he and his future wife Cathy would run with us at the track and on Sunday mornings. Cathy was a very good collegiate runner who did very well in some of the local races when she was around during the summers. They got married a few years ago and now have a 2 year old baby with another one on the way. They are currently living in central Jersey. Hopefully we will see some more of him in the future.

With Roger Price, Bruce, Gary, Bill Hagman and Ron Ayre, the 50 year age groups are becoming one of the most competitive age groups. With Steve Kohorst and Bill Bosmann turning 50 later this year, it is only going to get more difficult to place in this age group.

Finally congratulations to Eva Fisher and Sherry Sikora for setting PRs. I think that Steve was happier than Eva at the finish line after she had easily beat her previous best time.

Comments from Bruce - This was a new race, to benefit cancer research. Dave Siconolfi did the scoring and Mark Zenobia did the race organization. Only a few things went wrong - so it wasn't too bad at all. The 5K race started 10 minutes after the 2 mile walk. We ran about 50 yards and came to a "T" intersection. Not only did the runners not know that they should turn left (no one was directing us), but there were two cars and maybe seven walkers in the intersection. I pushed on the guy next to me to make sure he would turn left and he did. We avoided the cars and walkers. The course stayed on roadways for about a mile, then became dirt roads and finally dirt trails. There were spots where there were loose rocks, asphalt that hadn't been steam-rolled and tire tracks with grass in between. There was a young girl volunteer stationed in the woods. She was telling us that there was a left turn ahead. We (I) didn't know it, but it was the turn-around point (the course was out and back). The young girl hadn't directed the lead runners and they had gone backward around the woodsy triangle. The turn was a right turn. When the lead runners (now on their way back) got to where the young girl was, they had to cross through the oncoming slower runners. I was talking to one guy who said that on the way out, he had bumped into the runner in second place and then when HE was crossing on the way back, someone bumped HIM. The rest of the race was fine, no confussion. Then came the awards ceremony. There was supposed to be a wonderful raffle. Mark Zenobia was telling everyone that they had to be there to win – you couldn't pick up your friend's prize for him. They had a box full of envelopes - prizes to give away. Mark read off a random list of bib numbers. And a woman at the prize table took an envelope for each number that was read - and wrote the bib number on it. If no one claimed it, it was put aside - hopefully to be sent to someone. Only one prize counted in the you-had-to-be-there category - a trip to the Cayman Islands. A bib number was called. A girl jumped up and down and screamed happily. I went home.

Thanks for the quick results, Joel!!
